Ñâîþ òåîðèþ âïåðâûå èçëîæèë â 1913 â ñòàòüå Ïñèõîëîãèÿ, êàêîé åå âèäèò áèõåâèîðèñò (Psychology as the Behaviorist Views It). ×òîáû ïðåâðàòèòü ïñèõîëîãèþ â îáúåêòèâíóþ íàóêó, áèõåâèîðèçì îòâåðãàåò êàê ñîçíàòåëüíóþ, òàê è áåññîçíàòåëüíóþ ïñèõè÷åñêóþ äåÿòåëüíîñòü è èçó÷àåò ïîâåäåíèå â òåðìèíàõ ôèçèîëîãè÷åñêèõ ðåàêöèé íà ñòèìóëû.
